As our cities become larger and larger in relation to the resources and space available, we must increasingly focus on the systems that underlie our lifestyle.

In the past, our cities and our civilizations were a drop in an ocean of resources. There was little need for us to think of our systems of consumption and 

waste, as the environment was able to provide an unlimited supply, as well as absorb all of our waste.
